To guard against deportation, their best protection is to gain legal residency -- and CEUS Community Center helps, through affordable and pro bono immigration legal services. CEUS is one of the few nonprofits offering these services in NJ.
For more than 30 years, CEUS (officially, Comite En Union Para Salvadorenos) has been a friend to the immigrant community. Along with immigration legal services, we offer English classes, a women's empowerment group, direct food aid, and education on health, vaccines, and workplace rights.
Let us tell you the story of one client. Maria Y., 59, is a single mother who fled gang violence in El Salvador in 1999. With CEUS's help, she gained Temporary Protected Status, which allowed her to work legally. After her oldest son became a US citizen and filed a petition for her, she gained permanent resident status this year, again with the help of CEUS.
"My entire youth has been spent contributing to the economy of this country, working in restaurants and factories," Maria says. "CEUS has been my second home, and I am very grateful for the responsible and respectful service they gave me, even when I couldn't pay."
