United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore (UWLES) was founded in 1944 as a “community chest” to bring people together to meet growing community needs. Over 75 years later, UWLES continues to work as a partner with 40 local agencies, providing funding for programs and capacity building support to ensure the success of each organization. Annually, we support about 80 programs which focus on the Health, Education, and Financial Stability for all neighbors in the counties we serve: Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester.  We also provide direct services including, but not limited to:

  • GET CONNECTED Volunteer Center – a free resource to connect volunteers with 140+ nonprofits
  •  Wellness Made Easy – improving equitable access to better health
  • Read to Succeed – elementary reading support
  • Opioid and Addiction Awareness – advancing awareness through student art
  • ALICE© Report – data resource tools to identify and address community needs
  • Imagination Library™ - free home delivered books for children birth-five

The pandemic created extra challenges for non-profits, as demand for services increased while funding and volunteer resources were limited, but we rolled up our sleeves and worked together to rise to the challenge.

As a nonprofit leader, and with your support, UWLES will continue to leverage resources through donors, volunteers, and partners to make a difference for 1 in 3 local neighbors.  Together, We LIVE UNITED.
