シカゴ時間8月31日の夕方、皆様の愛によって、当初の目標額の$25000を無事に達成し、9月8日にはさらに$30000のゴールにも到達することができました。心から感謝いたします。大勢のみなさまが犠牲的に捧げてくださり、何と言って感謝を申し上げたらいいのかわかりません。本当にありがとうございます!

現在、ウィスコンシン大学の大学病院で、待機者リストに載せてもらう手続きを進めています。ウィスコンシン大学は、リストに載ってから移植の順番が来るまでが、だいたい、九ヶ月から1年くらいだそうです。

また、10月にはWPW(ウォルフ・パーキンソン・ホワイト)症候群の症状に対処するため、ノースウェスタン大学のメディカルセンターで日帰り手術を予定しています。(WPWもミトコンドリア病の症状の一つです。)乗り越えるべき課題はいくつもありますが、皆様の応援によって頑張ることができます。本当に感謝します!!

On the evening of August 31, Chicago time, we reached out initial goal of $25,000, and on Sept. 8, your love allowed us to reach our second goal of $30,000. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!  Marie will now in the process of getting placed on a waiting list at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center. Once she is on it, it is anticipated to take about 9 months to 1 year until Marie can receive transplants.

Additionally, Marie is scheduled to have a procedure to deal with some symptoms of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome which is also caused by mitochondrial disease. There are so many things Marie needs to overcome, but thanks to your love and support, she can keep going!

親愛なる皆さま

あなたが命に関わる病を抱えていたとしたら

近藤万里絵(こんどう・まりえ、米国イリノイ州在住)さんは、生きるチャンスが与えられるのを待っています。万里絵さんは、母系遺伝性ミトコンドリア糖尿病(MIDD)と診断されました。遺伝病であるため、ご家族も同じ病気を抱えています。最初に自覚症状があったのは2015年で、医師による診断は1型糖尿病でした。2017年になると腎臓の機能が低下し始め、2018年には聴力も失い始めました。そして今、生存のためには腎臓と膵臓の移植手術が必須であるというのが医師の見解です。移植手術を受けるまでの間、万里絵さんはいわゆる生活の質QOLを下げる、透析生活を余儀なくされます。

思うように動けない今の日常は、万里絵さんにとって辛いものです。そして、これまでの道のりをずっとそばで支えてきてくれた家族や友人の皆さんに、心から感謝しています。健康を損なう前の万里絵さんは、フリーランスの翻訳の仕事やボランティアに励み、家族や友人との時間を楽しんできました。しかし最近では、できることがかなり限られてきました。本人は移植手術を受けて、できる限り制限のない生活を送れるようになることを切望しています。そのためには皆さんのご協力が必要です。

残念ながら、万里絵さんの生きる希望は、非常に大きな対価を伴います。

アメリカでの腎臓と膵臓の移植手術には、平均で約713,000ドルおよそ7,500万円という費用がかかります。しかも、それはほんの始まりに過ぎません。保険でこの額の一部は賄えても、手術に関連するその他の諸経費がのしかかります。そして術後も、拒絶反応を防ぐ薬免疫抑制剤を一生飲み続け、診察を受け続けなければなりません。免疫抑制剤は大変額ですが、移植手術と同様、生きるためにどうしても必要なものなのです。

移植センターは自宅から200キロ離れており、検査や診察1回1回の自己負担額も相当なものです。移植手術を受ける際には、術後の回復を待つ間、介護者とともに病院近くに滞在しなければならず、これもさらなる重荷となります。

万里絵さんの場合、ウィスコンシン大学の移植センターから、手術や術後のケアに必要な資金を集めてからでないと、移植のための待機者リストにも載せてもらうことができないと言われています。そこで待機者リストに載るためにいくら必要になるか試算したところ、手術費用の自己負担分に加え、術後の薬拒絶反応を防ぐための免疫抑制剤とフォローアップケアの費用および月々の保険料、働けない間の生活費などをあわせ、2万5000ドルになりました。

しかしこの額は、病気のためにフルタイムで働けなくなっている万里絵さんが自力で出せる額ではありません。そこで、アメリカの臓器移植のための募金支援団体であるNational Foundation for Transplants(NFT)の助けを借りて、ファンドレイズをすることになりました。NFTは、30年以上に渡り、臓器移植患者の募金活動を支えている非営利団体です。

What if you were living on borrowed time?

Marie Kondo is awaiting a new lease on life. She was diagnosed with maternally inherited diabetic deafness (MIDD). Much of her family also suffers from this inherited mitochondrial disease.  Marie began experiencing symptoms in 2015 and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. By 2017, her kidneys began to fail, and by 2018 she began to lose her hearing. Now doctors say a kidney and pancreas transplant is critical to her survival. While awaiting her transplant, Marie must endure regular dialysis treatments that take a toll on her quality of life.

This has been a difficult time for Marie, as she’s not able to be as active as she once was. She is extremely grateful for the love and support of her family and friends, who have all been by her side every step of the way. Before her health began to decline, Marie enjoyed doing freelance translation, volunteering, and spending time with her family, but these days, her activities are quite limited. She looks forward to the transplant that will allow her to live life with as few limitations as possible, but she needs your help.

Unfortunately, Marie’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.  The average kidney and pancreas transplant costs approximately $713,000. And, that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Marie lives over 120 miles from the transplant center, and she incurs substantial expenses each time she visits for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. When she receives her transplant, Marie and her caregiver will need to stay near the hospital during recovery, adding to the financial strain.
