The goal for the Moves & Grooves “Innovation Day" is to inspire girls and students of color from marginalized communities to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers, see themselves as “makers and inventors," and to see technology in a fun and exciting new way!

Moves & Grooves exists to inspire our girls of color from marginalized communities to pursue their dreams, particularly in STEM careers as we see a deficit in women of color in this field. One factor that prevents black girls from entering and remaining in STEM fields are low teacher expectations that focus on student behavior rather than their academic development. Across the K-12 pipeline, Black girls are consistently compared to white girl femininity and are excessively punished as most teachers do not understand Black girlhood.

According to the National Science Board, women make up 47% of the current workforce but only 28% of the science and engineering workforce. Of this 28%, women of color comprise about 5%. STEM professions are some of the highest-paid, most in-demand jobs in the country. With the wave of giant tech companies making Nashville their new home, there will be over 8,500 job vacancies in the computer technology field paying an average annual salary of $110,000.

Moves & Grooves has found that, after incorporating STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, ART, and Math) -enriched activities to our programming, 96% of students report being “more interested” in attending college, specifically to pursue a STEM career.

Our girls of color need spaces that explore culturally relevant content, challenge them to think about their future, and provide mentorship, support, and opportunities to compete for those high-paying jobs. Otherwise, they are trapped in the cycle of poverty. There’s too much untapped talent and potential in our children and Moves & Grooves wants to change that.

Your support can help us expose students to new, creative career pathways they would not have considered otherwise.
