Lisa Wong Alano

Transplant Type:  Bone Marrow

In July 2009, Lisa was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML)--the same illness her aunt passed away from years ago. Doctors discovered Lisa had AML after she suffered a reaction to antibiotics after minor surgery. Doctors told Lisa a bone marrow transplant was her only hope for survival.

The AML diagnosis and impending transplant have taken a toll on the Alano family. After Lisa beat breast cancer in 2004, her family never thought Lisa might face such another terrifying medical crisis. Lisa and her husband, Emile, relocated from Hawaii to Seattle where Lisa underwent treatment in preparation for the bone marrow transplant. Their daughters, ages 14 and 10, stayed in Hawaii with family, and the separation was very difficult for this close-knit family.

Thankfully, Lisa's youngest brother was a perfect match and donated his bone marrow to save his sister's life in November 2009. Lisa wants nothing more than to spend many more years with Emile watching their two daughters grow up. She looks forward to once again taking walks with her family, working in her yard and volunteering for her daughters' school activities. But she needs your help.

A bone marrow transplant costs approximately $675,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Lisa will face significant medical expenses. She will need follow-up care and medications to ensure her body accepts the new bone marrow.

Emile took a leave of leave of absence from his job to travel 2,700 miles to Seattle to take care of Lisa. They must stay in Seattle for at least 4 months as Lisa receives her transplant and goes through recovery, adding to the family's financial strain.
