The Forest City Mural project is a creative place-making initiative for residents and visitors of Forest City. There will be nine murals painted throughout the borough on highly visible buildings on Forest City’s Main Street. The murals will have themes that express Forest City’s designation as a Trail Town and bring users of the Delaware & Hudson Trail into its downtown.

The mural is key component of a plan by Forest City leaders to develop as an outdoor town that is fun and welcoming. Forest City is creating access points from the trail to the downtown, with plans to enhance the borough’s walkability and bike-ability through new bike racks, street lamps, sidewalk tables, and other amenities. The building on which the mural will be painted is being developed as a center for events and displays to attract visitors to Forest City.

The mural will build community well-being, encouraging Forest City residents to like where they live and feel pride in their community. It will serve as a landmark for residents to bring friends and help them appreciate their history, culture, and natural resources. The mural will attract residents to the D&H trail and its exercise and nature education opportunities.

At its prominent outdoor location on Main Street in Forest City, thousands of passers-by will have access to this art, with hundreds seeing it daily. Valley In Motion’s partner, Northeast Art Project, has extensive experience painting murals, and will use techniques and materials that ensure decades-long enjoyment with minimal maintenance. We expect the mural to be a long-term destination, with people taking photographs at a “selfie station,” and posting on social media, bringing more awareness and appreciation to Forest City and the region.
