Eat Right and Move: Decreasing Cardiovascular Risk Factors in our Black Communities during COVID-19

Imagine for a moment that you’re hungry.  Really hungry.  But your cabinets are bare and your refrigerator empty.  The closest grocery store is a 40-minute walk in each direction.   You don’t want fast food, but it’s right nearby.  Not even 20 minutes there and back. Best of all, you return with food in hand, hot and ready to eat.  Decision made, you head for the door, trying to decide if you’ll super size your meal.

Then you pause, remembering your doctor’s advice to eat better and exercise.  You think, at least I’ve got the exercise part covered by walking, that’s something.  Besides, I don’t even know what half of the foods are on the diet plan the nurse gave me, much less how to cook them.  And exercise – who has the time or money for that – and I’m just too tired to exercise anyway.

You feel trapped between knowing what to do and wanting to do it – but can’t because of your zip code and things out of your control.

Wait.  What if there was a solution?  In your neighborhood.  With people facing a similar struggle.  Free of charge.  A way to get back in control of your health.  Would you accept the invitation?

Eat Right and Move.   That’s our challenge to you – and it’s also the name of our program. Just two goals, very simple and direct.  Designed and run by experts from LSU Health Shreveport.  We offer medical evaluations, healthy cooking lessons, exercise, and activity monitoring. Oh and the best part – you eat what you cook in class!  Free and open to the public, this six-month program will be held at Paradise Baptist Church.  We will help you achieve a healthy lifestyle and control your high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

But we need your support to keep our services free.  A donation of $20 allows us to purchase fresh vegetables for our cooking classes, $40 supplies an activity tracker, $70 buys a step exercise platform.

Please consider making an impact right here in Shreveport.  Your neighbors, co-workers, and friends need your help, especially in the face of COVID-19.   Those with underlying health conditions like heart disease and obesity are more likely to die if they become sick with COVID-19.  Working together, we CAN achieve a healthy Shreveport and prevent COVID-19 deaths.
