Transplant Type: Double Lung
Don Reed is fighting for his life. He has been diagnosed with COPD and emphysema. Sadly, his mother passed away from the same illness over 30 years ago. Don’s illness has made even basic functions difficult, and he often relies on his family’s assistance. His lung function has declined to just 14%, and he requires the assistance of supplemental oxygen. Doctors now say a double-lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During such a difficult time, Don is thankful for the love and support of his family, including his wife of 40 years, Bonnie, and their daughter, Brandy. He longs to be the active husband and father he once was, but his illness leaves him physically exhausted. More than anything, Don looks forward to being useful again by trying to find work he can handle and returning to enjoying the many hobbies he used to enjoy. But right now he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Don’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
When he receives his transplant, Don will have to temporarily relocate over 200 miles to be near his transplant center while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Five years ago, his declining health forced him to stop working, further adding to his financial burdens.
