We are participating in the 2022 A Community Thrives grant-making and fundraising program to expand our hours to have Safe Space Saturdays. Days that we will provide our community with resources like programming, artist talks, community forums, and drop-in hours for safe, happy crafting. We plan to do this by opening our classroom for community use on Saturdays.

Why?

The past couple of years have been tumultuous, and we are so grateful to have weathered the storm. We understand that this hard time did not just hit our organization, but our community and the world at large. This chain of events caused us to ask: “how can we be even more of a resource to the Detroit community?” We asked ourselves and the people around us, and we learned that people want safe spaces in the city. Spaces to host community events, spaces to learn from and teach others, and spaces where parents can confidently bring their children to spend quality time. With this discovery, we realized that our classroom could be a space like that with certain upgrades and elements. We have already started upgrading our space and tech to accommodate everyone. However, we still need resources to be able to extend our hours and give our community the best experience possible. Here is where we could use your help.

How?

We want to be able to extend our Saturday hours to have Safe Space Saturdays in conjunction with our Detroit Community Store. What does that look like? Well, we envision opening our classroom on Saturdays for drop-in hours featuring events, programming, free crafting supplies and projects, and community connection and resource building. We plan to provide something for everyone. Artist talks for the creatives, STEM-based crafting projects for parents to do with kids, community forums for interested Detroit residents, and so much more! The possibilities are endless, and our vision of being a safe, tangible space for Detroit residents to enjoy is so close. We just need your help to make it a reality.

It takes $1400 to staff and provides refreshments and resources for one Safe Space Saturday. We would love to do as many as possible, but we are aiming to fund 5 Safe Space Saturdays to start. Any donation helps. A donation of any amount grants you access to an exclusive #SafeSpaceSaturdays email list, where you’ll get behind-the-scenes information on new additions to the classroom, upcoming guest speakers and themes, and even get a chance to weigh in on programming and ideas! A donation of $50-100 gets two tickets to a special kick-off reception for our first Safe Space Saturday, complete with refreshments, a tour of Arts & Scraps, and more! A donation of $250-500 gets four tickets to the kick-off reception, as well as some exclusive Arts & Scraps merchandise! You can also sponsor a Saturday if you donate $1400, in which your name or business will be prominently displayed in any marketing materials for the selected date and you will also have access to some of the planning aspects of the selected date.

When?

We plan to kick off Safe Space Saturdays in Summer 2023. We want to help fill a space for parents for free, consistent summer programming for their children to enjoy.

We are so close to providing a fun, safe, educational space for Detroit residents to enjoy! With your help, we can achieve this goal! Any amount gets us closer to our goal and keeps you in the loop!
