Abel Cortez
Transplant Type: Kidney
Abel Cortez is awaiting a new lease on life. He has battled diabetes for more than 20 years, and over the course of time, it impacted his kidneys. As a result, Abel was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. He is now on dialysis, which takes a toll on his quality of life and leaves him very tired. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical for his survival.
During this difficult time, Abel is thankful for the love and support of his wife of 31 years, Maria, and their family and friends. Abel and Maria have four children and three grandchildren, and his illness causes the whole family to worry. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free him from dialysis and give him back his energy. Abel wants nothing more than to be healthy again so he can continue to enjoy spending time with his family. But right now, he needs your help.
The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Abel still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. Abel’s declining health and rigorous dialysis schedule forced him to stop working, which is difficult for his family as he was their main source of income.
