LGBTQ+ youth thrive at one•n•ten's Youth Center
one•n•ten was founded in 1993 to provide unique opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) youth to connect, socialize and receive support in navigating community resources. Our services have since diversified, yet our goal is the same. We enhance the lives of LGBTQ+ youth through programs promoting self-expression, self-acceptance, and healthy life choices. We provide comprehensive programs for LGBTQ+ and allied youth ages 11-24. Our key programs include our Phoenix Youth Center, statewide satellite sites, housing navigation services, Camp OUTdoors, digital/virtual support programs, and workforce readiness. In 2020, one•n•ten provided services and support to 673 unique youth from 45 towns and cities across Arizona.
For 28 years, one•n•ten has worked to combat the negative impact and de-stabilization that stigma and discrimination have in Arizona on LGBTQ+ youth. By providing safe spaces and innovative programs for youth to develop stabilizing factors in their lives, we help build resilience. The top three reasons that youth reported attending programs in 2020 were (1) to make friends and build a sense of community, (2) to gain social skills (3) to build self-esteem.
On Friday, March 13, 2020, one•n•ten temporarily paused all in-person programs due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. By the next Monday, our team was providing online programs to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth. Over the course of the next year, one•n•ten continued to build, modify, and expand digital program offerings, ensuring social distance did not have to mean social isolation. Engaging programs were facilitated on a variety of youth-friendly platforms like Zoom, Twitch, RocketChat, and Discord. These programs offer a uniques space for youth from our satellite sites, youth center, camp programs, and beyond to connect. As we look at our future and returning to in-person programming, one•n•ten has established an internal re-opening task force focused on recreating our safe spaces in accordance with guidance and recommendations from state and federal health and safety agencies.
GiveOUT Day on June 30, 2021, is the only national giving event for the LGBTQ+ community. We are asking our supporters to help us reach our GiveOUT Day goal of $2,500 to ensure we can continue providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ young people to be their authentic selves and build a sense of community.
