Don't let your family's stories be lost!

At the Topeka Genealogical Society, we believe that all families have important memories and stories that need to be preserved and handed down to future generations. And, we know that if efforts are not undertaken to preserve family memories and stories, they can be lost within just three generations.

Research has shown that knowledge and awareness of one's family history helps to build a sense of connection and leads to increased self esteem, resilience, empathy and compassion. We believe that knowledge and awareness of family history helps to build stronger individuals and families, and stronger families help to build stronger communities.

Get to know your Ancestors -  We're here to help!

Our mission is to promote, encourage and support interest in family history. We carry out that mission by offering a wide array of educational programming, working to preserve and provide access to records of historical or genealogical importance, and maintaining and operating an independent genealogical research library. Our library collection includes more than 11,000 titles and resources pertaining to every U.S. state, plus many unique original source materials. Although the advent of the Internet has made family history research much easier than before, there are still many important records that are not online and there is a need for sound research skills and knowledge. We're here to help provide access to records and to build those skills that will increase our patrons' chances of success in their family history endeavors. All of our programs and services are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about their family history.

We are an all-volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, funded entirely through memberships and donations. We do not receive any public funding or tax support. We operate on a modest budget and we're pretty good at stretching a dollar, but it costs money to maintain a building, operate a library, and to stay current with technology.

How will your donation be used?

In the past few weeks, we have had an aged air conditioning system fail in the portion of our building that houses our library collection. Because of the system's age, replacement parts are not available and it looks as though we will have to replace it and possibly the connected furnace and ductwork. Our library is currently closed and will remain closed until we are able to restore air conditioning service in the building. The failure of the air conditioning system is just one of several areas where we need to make repairs to our building to keep in functional and safe. Your donation will be applied toward repair or replacement costs for the heating and cooling system, and to other needed building repairs and maintenance.

Please consider supporting our work.

If you share our belief that what we do is important and helps to make our community a better place to live, we invite you to support us by making a donation today.  WE THANK YOU!
