Who We Are & What We Do
Thank you for visiting our page for A Community Thrives! Your contribution today will go to support our animal care program which provides both routine and advanced veterinary services to dogs, cats, and small critters. Since our inception in 2010, we have saved over 15,500 animals and will care for more than 3,300 animals in 2021 alone. This year, we are projected to spend over $500,000 on veterinary expenses for these special animals. Even with a global pandemic, our lifesaving work hasn't slowed down.
Ruff Start Rescue is a no-kill, foster-based animal welfare organization. We are established in Central Minnesota and serve communities across Minnesota and the southern United States. Our rescue is composed of 800 volunteers, 450 fosters, and leadership who are dedicated to helping animals in need.
All animals, while in rescue, will receive routine veterinary services such as vaccinations, microchipping, spaying/neutering and deworming. Many of these animals will also need more advanced care for serious medical issues such as heartworm treatment, orthopedic concerns, infections, dental diseases, and more. These additional expenses often far exceed the animals' adoption fees.
In addition to our animal care program, we seek to educate the community about pressing animal welfare issues and the importance of rescue. Since 2014, we have educated 6,000 children and their families about animal rescue and responsibility. This program is designed to instill passion and create the next generation of animal advocates.
We also offer funding for low-income families and colony caretakers for spay/neuter services for community-owned and feral barn cats. From 2014 through 2020, we have subsidized 1,000 surgeries for community cats and 100 dogs.
We are so grateful to our amazing community of supporters, volunteers, fosters, and business partners for helping us to save so many lives, educate thousands of children and create resources for community animal needs. Thank you for all of your support!
