The Veterans Administration does not provide or fund lodging to families of veterans who are under treatment at the Truman VA Hospital. It also does not provide or fund lodging to veterans who live within 50 miles of the hospital. These rules result in hardship on the veterans and their families during their treatment. Presently there is no facility in the mid-Missouri area that provides free lodging to families of veterans who are under treatment at the Truman VA Hospital. Since the Veterans Administration does not provide funds for family lodging, family members must pay for their own motel room plus transportation, or sleep in uncomfortable chairs or sofa's located either in the patient's room or the lounge.
The mission of the nationwide Fisher House Foundation is to provide a free "home away from home" for veterans and their families during their treatment at the hospital. The mission of the Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House is to promote awareness and support for the Fisher House, and to raise funds to be used for the construction of this new facility which may be completed as early as 2023.
The Mid-Missouri Fisher House will be constructed on the campus of the Truman VA Hospital located in Columbia Missouri. The hospital will prepare the site, but the cost of the building construction will be approximately $7 million. ALL donations collected by the Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House beginning in fiscal year 2020/2021 will be used toward this construction.
The Mid-Missouri Fisher House will serve veterans and their families in the service area of Truman VA Hospital. This area is comprised of 43 Missouri counties surrounding Columbia Missouri plus Pike County in Illinois. Because Truman Hospital is also a referral center for heart care services, the hospital actually serves the entire state of Missouri as well as serving patients from neighboring states.
It is estimated that the Mid-Missouri Fisher House will serve approximately 12,000 men, women and children for an annual cost savings to patients of over $350,000.
