Family Service Association of Bucks County is a non-profit social service organization with locations throughout Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It is the mission of Family Service to listen, care and help. Every day. Since 1953, Family Service has been improving the lives of individuals, children and families, doing whatever it takes to help them overcome obstacles and reach their full potential. In the past year, we served more than 40,000 residents in several areas of need.

One of the most impactful programs at Family Service is our Emergency Homeless Shelter in Levittown. Each year, the Shelter provides temporary residency to as many as 500 individuals, couples and families, 1/3 of whom are children, and many of whom have never previously experienced the plight of homelessness. In fact since 2019, the number of families admitted to the Shelter has increased dramatically, and the COVID-19 pandemic certainly contributed (and still contributes) to this trend. Family Service Shelter residents are from many backgrounds, and most lead successful, working-class lives with their families, until they are stricken with a sudden illness, unexpected loss of employment, or worst of all, the death of a family member, frequently, one who is a primary earner. As a result, even with assistance, it is often not enough. First a few bill payments are missed, then the utilities are shut off, and finally, the rent or mortgage goes unpaid, eventually leading to homelessness. This is where Family Service steps in.

Once the Shelter is made aware of a person or family in need, our admissions and case management team springs into action, providing temporary housing, nutrition and medical attention if necessary. From there, it is the goal of our entire staff to ensure the comfort of all residents, while providing them with the support they need to get back on their feet, and into permanent housing as soon as possible. This is done through individualized case management programs that include counseling, educational programming, family strengthening, childcare, and assistance navigating the complex medical and insurance industries, as well as the job market. Then, when the time is right, the Shelter will also help locate a new forever home.

Please consider a gift of as little as $5, to help support our neighbors in need. We sincerely hope that homelessness NEVER affects you or your loved ones, but the reality that we have seen in recent years, is that it can sadly happen to anybody. If it ever did happen, we want you to know that Family Service is always here for you. Our Shelter is open 24/7 year-round.
