The Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey is here to ensure that all who seek housing have an equal opportunity to rent, purchase, finance or insure the property they choose.

THE FAIR HOUSING COUNCIL OF NORTHERN NEW JERSEY

THE NEED

The need for Fair Housing has become more evident as Fair Housing Council recently settled a housing discrimination complaint on behalf of an African American female with 3 children and a housing voucher. She was denied an apartment based on her race. The client called Fair Housing Council to report the incident at which point Fair Housing proceeded with a complaint. The experienced staff at Fair Housing Council was instrumental in counseling and guiding the client through her painful experience of being denied housing for herself and children solely based on her race. The client received a significant compensation for her pain, suffering and humiliation.

Fair Housing counselors educate first time homebuyers on the steps to homeownership. We explain what lenders look for and work to help them qualify for affordable mortgage programs, in an effort to promote affordable housing and reduce homelessness.

Our mortgage crisis counseling helps identify the source of hardships homeowners face, and provide options to avoid delinquency for those in imminent danger of default as well as prevent foreclosure for those who are currently late on payments.

TESTIMONIAL

Research confirms what many of us probably suspect - that one’s childhood neighborhood influences their chances of success later in life (e.g., Chetty, Hendren, Friedman 2015).  For this reason, I owe my success as an adult in part to the Fair Housing Council of Northern NJ:

When my parents decided to move from New York City to the suburbs to start and raise a family back in the late 1960s, they were discriminated against by the landlord of the Teaneck, NJ apartment they were set to move into when it was discovered they were black.

The Fair Housing Council stepped in and actively pursued my parents’ case, successfully proving discrimination based on false claims and ultimately winning my parents the right to move into their home.  As a result, I was raised in a town where I thrived, was surrounded by multiple races, cultures, and religions, attended good private schools, got good healthcare, and was able to have a “normal” childhood without the worries that often exist in less desirable towns.

All of these things contributed to my career and financial success - including my ability to give back to others by mentoring, donating, and volunteering.   Had the FHC not been around, my parents may have had to move to a different town that may not have afforded me the benefits I had access to in Teaneck.

Since housing discrimination still very much exists today, support for the FHC and other such organizations is still very much needed.  I know KPMG is committed to building a strong pipeline of diverse talent starting from childhood, so ensuring that all adults have equal access to desirable housing to raise their children would be a great foundational element to support in that spirit.
