Who we are

The Deersville Community Players are a community theater group consisting of adults and children ranging from 4-85 years in age. We strive to produce excellent quality, community led theater productions. We are proud that our productions allow us to utilize our historic theater, the Deersville Community Hall. We are located in Deersville, Ohio, an Appalachian town with a population of just 88 people! Much of the money we raise from our productions contributes to the care and well being of our charming old building, which boasts great historical significance in our community. We produce at least two live shows each year in spring and fall, most times filling our beloved theater to capacity. Our artists are locals, many living within walking distance of our theater, while others join us from surrounding rural communities within Harrison and Tuscarawus Counties. We attract audiences comprised of those who live locally as well as many visitors who travel to our humble region to vacation at Tappan and Clendening Lakes. This scenic area, where thousands of visitors come yearly to enjoy the lakes, wildlife, cabins and campgrounds, is just a small part of the beautiful, rolling landscape that surrounds the Main Street historic district in Deersville (est. 1815).

We are proud to offer a safe space to try new things, develop emerging talents, engage in artistic endeavors,

and foster the community-minded spirit which is such a vital part of rural living.

What we do

As a community theater group, one of our foremost goals is to stage quality theatrical performances. In an effort to make this happen the education and artistic development of our participants is a vital part of what we do. Because we welcome children and adults of all ages and abilities, our organization lends itself well to a peer-mentoring model which provides support during each phase of a production.

Our qualified and experienced programming board strives to promote ample opportunities for artists to become acquainted with and explore their creative selves in a safe-space. We work hard to ensure our participants have an understanding of all technical aspects of stage theater. We guide and encourage our young performers, teaching basic skills in acting, singing and dancing as they learn to read scripts, music and  simple dance routines. We encourage all of our actors to participate in learning games, which we use as a tool to teach body and facial expression.

As an organization, the Deersville Community Players believe theater should be a fun and empowering experience for performers of all ages and levels of talent. We applaud the successes of those who practice honing their talents whether their progress is made on our stage, in their school or church, or in private lessons. We are extremely proud that many of our performers have gone on to high school, college and other community performances having learned their basic skills and love of theater and performing  in our hometown.  Our small theater provides a much needed center for artistic enrichment that many rural citizens living in appalachian communities like ours would not otherwise have access to. We are pleased to have developed a structured atmosphere where  individuals can grow and learn new talents while working together towards a common goal. We are certain much of our success on stage is a direct result of the nurturing, supportive and uplifting environment we have developed which brings together genuine friendship and community spirit!

What we need

Our organization is comprised of individuals and families who donate their time and energy to support our mission. Our most significant challenge is not building a sense of community—we’ve got that part down! We are faced with the exhaustive and expensive responsibility of maintaining a safe and inviting physical space to house our activities. Our beloved community hall is in need of our help! The challenge of constant repairs to an aging infrastructure and a dingy, time weathered facade is huge. Our volunteer board work tirelessly to obtain funding sources, trying to keep us viable, but we are forced to prioritize the many repairs and maintenance projects required of a building built over 100 years ago!

Goals

We are working to obtain funding through the A Community Thrives grant program which will allow us to replace the worn and broken vinyl siding, soffet, fascia and gutters on our exterior and install a much needed parking lot for off-street parking. Allowing much safer accessibility for our elderly and handicapped guests.

We need your help to move on to the next phase of this program by securing at least

$3000.00 in donations!

Your willingness to help with exterior renovations to The Deersville Community Hall will not only make our building look fresh and inviting but will create a sense of civic pride within our small community.

We will be forever grateful for your consideration. Thank you!
