In 1986, a citizen of Blue Springs approached the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department with the idea of beginning a theatre company for the community of Blue Springs. From those meetings came Blue Springs Community Theater, as it was known for the first three years. The first production was the musical Scrooge. More than 100 persons auditioned on October 1st and 2nd, 1986 and a cast of approximately 40 persons performed the show. The first show was performed with recorded music.

Since then, over 2000 people from the community have worked both onstage and backstage to bring live theatre to Blue Springs. Most of these individuals have been involved in multiple productions.

Blue Springs City Theatre has always had an open-door policy and welcomes any and all who would wish to contribute their time and talents to the theatre.

Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, our doors were closed. All but one of our 2020 performances was canceled,
and as a non-profit, income from ticket sales pays for equipment and overhead costs. Even as communities and businesses have begun opening back up, we still were not allowed access to our venue, which at the time was located in a local high school building. In addition to not allowing outside organizations into district buildings, the school district is also planning to tear down our existing space to create space for more students. As we were aware of this upcoming plan, we took advantage of our time away from the stage to seek out a new venue.

In April of 2021, we entered into a partnership with our local movie theater, Miller Theatres. The owners of Miller Theatres have generously provided to us one of their auditoriums to be converted to a live performance space. Our new space is known as the Live! Auditorium at Miller Theatres. We are so very happy to have our own space to rehearse and perform.

We have a lot of work to do.  To turn this movie theater into a live performance space, we need to make several modifications, including stage construction, purchase, and installation of stage lighting and other production specialty equipment, and the purchase and renovation of an RV/trailer to provide a greenroom/dressing area and bathroom for our actors and crew.

As a result of our theater closure, our community doesn’t have any live performance arts available to them. With these funds, we will be able to complete our renovations and bring live theater back to Blue Springs. Once our renovations are complete, we plan to add affordable youth and adult theater education programming

We thank you for your support!
